Modern East Asia Vol. 2, No. 1 (December 2003)

Abstract

Based on J.Y. Lin's interpretation of the "Needham Puzzle" this paper analyzes the puzzle from another perspective. It is argued that because of the fact that high agricultural productivity levels had never been reached in ancient times, China could not achieve an industrial revolution. The author looks behind such claims and tries to shed new light on the "Needham Puzzle." He concludes his paper with some policy recommendations.
