Abstract

The number of independent voters in Japan has risen dramatically over the last three decades, causing political parties to adapt to the new political environment.

In the past, opposition parties benefited the most from the increasing number of independent voters. The new LDP leader Koizumi, however, succeeded in capturing the support of the non-affiliated voters. The media and Koizumi's permanent campaign strategy has been crucial here. In this paper, the author analyses changing electoral campaign strategies of the LDP and the opposition parties.
